Learn About the Council-Manager Form of Government
Learn About the Council-Manager Form of GovernmentLearn About the Council-Manager Form of GovernmentIn the council-manager form of city government, the city council makes laws and broad policy decisions for the city manager and staff to carry out.According to the International City/County Management Association, the council-manager form of government combines the strong political leadership of elected officials with the strong managerial experience of an appointed manager or administrator. All power and authority to set policy rest with an elected governing body, which includes a mayor or chairperson and members of the council, commission, or board. The governing body, in turn, hires a nonpartisan manager who has very broad authority to run the organization.? Use of the Council-Manager Form of Government The council-manager form of government was created to fight corruption and unethical behavior by fostering professionalism, transparency, responsiveness, and accountability. To t he greatest extent possible, council-manager cities and counties separate the political nature of law and policy making with the apolitical nature of implementation. This form of government is used in cities and counties large and small. Most small cities use the council-manager form of government. Some large cities have retained a strong mayor form of government to effectively deal with immense political pressures that come with a large population. While this form of government was created in the US, its use has spread to other countries. Local governments in Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom have adopted the council-manager system. Manager Under the council-manager form of government the city manager functions as the chief executive of the government organization. Like a private sector, CEO does for a company, the city manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the city and serves as the chief advisor to the city council. In directing d aily operations of the city, the manager is responsible for ensuring effective and efficient government service. Every city employee ultimately answers to the city manager, so the manager has the right to hire and fire staff as appropriate and allowable by law. As the councils chief policy advisor, the city manager recommends city policy for consideration by the council. The manager has a professional obligation to give complete and unbiased information to the council. The manager consults with department heads and the city attorney to ensure the advice he or she gives is sound. Council The city council is the legislative body for the city. Its role is to adopt laws and policies to govern the city. The council leaves implementation up to the city manager and the rest of the city staff. While the particulars of how council members are elected vary by city, members are always elected by the citys residents. Direct election ensures that council members are responsive to the people who voted them into office. Mayor In fruchtwein situations, the mayor is a voting member of the city council who has no more authority than any other council member. The mayor presides over council meetings and performs ceremonial duties as outlined in the city charter. Effective mayors exert more influence than their official authority gives them.

Air Force Combat Controller Training
Air Force Combat Controller TrainingAir Force Combat Controller TrainingCombat controllers set up air traffic control and perform close air support in remote locations. And it takes some time to groom them - more than 24 months from start to finish. Often they deploy into other military special ops teams as not only the JTAC - Joint Terminal Attack Controller, but as the expert in air traffic control, fire support, and air-ground communications with both fixed and rotary assets. CCTs are certified Air Traffic Controllers as well. Trainees go from basic to advanced special operations skills. Physical, mental and emotional toughness are essential. In fact, the tiefpunkt standards just to get your foot into the door for training are the following CCT PAST(Minimum Standards) - 2 x 25 meter underwater (Pass/Fail, 3 min between each)with10 min rest - 500 meter swim (freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke),max time 11 min 42secwith30 min rest - 1.5 mile run, max time 10 min10 secwith 10 m in rest -Pull ups in 1 min,8 minimum reps with 3 min rest - Sit ups in 2 min,48 minimum repswith 3 min rest - Push ups in 2 min,48 minimum repswith 3 min rest - 3 mile - 50 lb ruck march in under 45 minutes It is not recommended to stop your progress at the minimum standards. You will need your fitness levels to be higher than these standards to be successful and survive the cut. The Combat Controller Training Pipeline After the Candidate Course there are two different professions with two different pipelines (but similar) to follow depending on if you want to be a PJ or CCT. Here is the PJ and CCT pipeline of training Basic Military Training 8.5 weeks of training. CCT Recruits can request upon enlistment to join the CCT program if they qualify, so they will know if they get the opportunity to attend CCT training during the recruiting process IF they maintain standards. Battlefield Airman Prep Course - All battlefield airmen candidates (PJ, CCT, SOWT, and TACP) attend an 8-week prep course. The goal of Prep is to rebuild the Airmen for a more challenging training program in the Air Force Special Operations Command. CCT Selection is a two-week-long Combat Control Selection Course at Lackland Air Force cousine, Texas. The selection course focuses on sports physiology, nutrition, basic exercises, combat control history and fundamentals. After selection, the CCT recruit will attend the Combat Control Operator Course located at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. The CCT Operator course is 15.5 weeks long where the recruit will learn all the skills to specialize in air to ground communications, aircraft capabilities, navigation, and more. Finally, the 12-week Combat Control School is offered to make this warrior highly capable to perform air traffic control, air-ground communications, and air support in any environment in the world. During the Advanced Skill Training, the additional military training the CCT endures makes the special operator.Learning to jump from planes, combat SCUBA dive, are just a few of the advanced military training received by these special operators will learn in the next 12-15 months. US Army Airborne School - 3 weeks US Army Combat Divers School - 4 weeks US Navy Underwater Egress Training - 1 day US Air Force Basic Survival School - 2.5 weeks US Army Free-fall Parachutist School - 5 weeks CCTs and the Team The goal of training is to teach the skills needed to call in air strikes and more, but most importantly, it is about taking a group of men and forming a disciplined team. Throughout their careers, with less than 500 officers and enlisted men assigned to the specialty, its likely theyll work together at some point. So teamwork must be second nature. Once the CCTs have completed all the above courses, they get stationed at the various Special Tactics Squadrons around the world such as Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, Hurlburt Field, Florida, Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, Pope Field, North Caroli na, Kadena Air Base, Japan, RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom. Training Is Never Done When in the Air Force Special Operations, the CCT learns many ways special operations forces get to work. That includes parachuting - both static line and free fall, scuba diving, land navigation, vehicle and boat. After they become static-line parachutists, sporting more than 100 pounds of gear on their backs when they hit the ground running, students jump into a more demanding and dangerous skill. The highlight of the phase for most students is military free-fall parachuting. Combat ready When they deploy, Combat Controllers are battlefield airmen and are responsible for the close coordination of airstrikes, aircraft traffic control of fixed wing, helicopter gunships, and unmanned drones flown by different branches of the military. CCTs are vital to ground personnel in Afghanistan after combat troops were scaled back in the 15-year war, supporting Afghan troops with airstrikes and aerial su rveillance missions in order to fight back the Taliban and ISIS. The Ultimate Guide to Getting Noticed on LinkedIn
The Ultimate Guide to Getting Noticed on LinkedInThe Ultimate Guide to Getting Noticed on LinkedIn1. Be presentable. If youre looking for a job, getting noticed on LinkedIn can be one of the best things that can happen to you. If you havent been headhunted in the past three months, then you probably need to think about how easy it is to find you there.Let us show you how you can get noticed on LinkedIn in no time. Why should you care about LinkedIn?LinkedIn has become a universally adopted hiring tool, with mora than 93 percent of recruiters using it as part of their process (Jobvite). In comparison, only 56 percent of companies were hiring on social media in 2011 (SHRM).More than 87 percent of recruiters use LinkedIn as part of their process. This trend is fruchtwein likely to continue. Recruiters already report social professional networks to be the no. 1 source of quality hires. Top recruiters engage with LinkedIn 60 percent mora than average ones. And where the best go, others are l ikely to follow. You should take notice too. LinkedIn is the third most popular social network in terms of unique visitors - right behind Facebook and Twitter. Still, even though most people are familiar with the former two, LinkedIn can be a bit intimidating for complete beginners.Well help you get started. How does hiring on LinkedIn work?Understand how the hiring process looks from the perspective of recruiters. A lot of recruitment work revolves around the distinction between active and passive candidates.Active candidates are those who are actively seeking work. They respond to job advertisements and actively reach out to potential employers. This doesnt mean theyre necessarily unemployed. About 25 percent of fully-employed workforce falls into this category. When it comes to passive candidates, distinctions can get a bit blurry. For instance, not all passive candidates are totally passive. Many are employed and simply not actively looking for something new. Still, recruiters kno w that about 87 percent of the workforce are open to new job opportunities. Most recruiters see the indisputable advantages of hiring passive talent. Passive candidates are unlikely to inflate their qualificationssince theyre not desperate for a job. They also have the exact skill setrecruiters seek. This means passive hires areoften a better fit for their company than what recruiters usually find in their pile of resumes. This is where LinkedIn comes into play.Recruiters scour LinkedIn for quality candidates on a daily basis. They only have limited options when searching for the ever-elusive passive talent. For this reason, social media are often the most powerful tool at their disposal.Whether youre actively looking for work or simply keeping an eye out for a new opportunity, you want to make sure your LinkedIn profile stands out.Getting noticed on LinkedIn is no alchemy. You can make it happen by focusing on ansicht three aspects of personal branding1. Be presentable.LinkedIn is s peed dating for professionals. Once recruiters find your profile, you want to keep them there. Approach your LinkedIn page as a place where you can show off your personal brand. Avoid anything odd, you dont want to put them off.Mind how you appear in a search result.Your headline is the first thing theyre going to see. You have 120 characters at the top of your page to tell the world what you (want to) do.Many people just put down their official job title, which is not very informative. Try to be as descriptive as possible. If you simply write Advertising Professional or Marketing Specialist, its difficult to say what your expertise might be. Its much better to write something like Seasoned advertising professional with 15+ years of experience in brand strategy. This lets recruiters know exactly if youre the fit theyre looking for.Make your headline as descriptive as possible.Second, if you want to score a job in Silicon Valley, change your location to Silicon Valley. Recruiters sea rch zip codes. Finally, you want to make sure your headline, as well as your entire profile, contains relevant keywords. You need to set up your profile to be optimally findable on LinkedIn. More on this later - keep reading.Show your best face. The picture should be of your face. Not a significant other. Not a group photo. Choose a simple headshot where youre looking straight ahead. Have a professional picture taken, if you can. Your photo doesnt have to be boring but you need to look professional and pleasant. Go for trustworthy and dependable. Stay away from quirky or sexy. Ask yourself, If my grandmother looked at this picture, would she be proud?Your photo doesnt have to be boring but you need to look professional and pleasant.People remember faces more than names. If you want recruiters to remember you, use a headshot. End of story. Whatever you do, dont leave your profile without a photo. If you do that, you send the message that you couldnt be bothered to upload it. This make s your potential employers wonder What else is this person careless about? One last thing - dont forget to upload a cover photo eitherMake your summary captivating.Make up your mind as to what you want to communicate about yourself. This goes for the rest of your profile as well. You need to project a clear image of who you want to be.Be a bit creative with the form of your summary. You can include infographics of your experience, a video of a talk you gave, or high-resolution photos. A combination of impactful text with strong visuals grabs recruiters attention. It makes them want to learn more about you. Think of it as your elevator pitch. You have about 20 seconds to make an impression.the reader needs to have a clear idea of who you are and what you bring to the table. How far you can go in terms of creativity depends on your industry - some are more traditional than others. Still, at the end of the section, the reader must have a clear idea of who you are and what you bring to the table.End with a call to action. For example, Please reach out to me to discuss possibilities of cooperation in .2. Be findable.LinkedIn is a search engine. One way recruiters search for new talent is similar to how you use Google Search. You want to make sure your name shows among top search results for your profession.Complete your profile.Basics first. LinkedIn says your profile will appear 40 times more in search results if complete. In other words, you will receive 40 times more opportunities through LinkedIn if you do this. This should be the first thing you do after signing up.What makes a profile complete?Your industry and location. An up-to-date current position (with a description). Two past positions.Your education.Your skills (minimum of 3).A profile photo. At least 50 connections. After youve completed all of these, your profile will receive the All-Star rank. First, these profiles are more attractive to potential employers. Second, they also appear considerably higher in search results, which helps you get noticed on LinkedIn.Become familiar with LinkedIn SEO.As we have already said, LinkedIn is a search engine. This means that you should include keywords everywhere Having the right keywords in your profile is critical for getting noticed on LinkedIn.If youre unsure as for what keywords to choose, dont be afraid to get some inspiration from other professionals in your field. Or you can go to the Careers page of your potential employers and pick some common keywords around that job or industry.LinkedIn algorithm weighs current job title, past job title, and headlines more than any other sections in your profile. The LinkedIn algorithm can change over time. As for now, it weighs current job title, past job title, and headlines more than any other sections in your profile. Make sure these sections include the most important of your keywords. Also, dont forget to optimise your Skills section as well. One last thing to consider - you need a sizeable ne twork to benefit from LinkedIn SEO. The more connections you have, the easier-to-find your profile will be for anyone whos conducting research on the vast LinkedIn database.Leave a trail of virtual crumbs that lead to your profile.Apart from LinkedIn SEO, there are several other tricks to help you get noticed. Here are some great ways to get on recruiters radarBe identifiable. Go to your Privacy Controls and click Select what others see when youve viewed their profile. Make sure you check off the Your name and headline (Recommended) option. Now you can start visiting profiles of people you want to notice you. When you view other peoples profiles, they will view your profile in return. All things in moderation, though. If they see youre visiting their profiles ten times a day, it can get creepy. If you still want to do it, select the anonymous option in your Privacy Controls.Check out whos viewed your personal profile. You will only be able to access this feature if you become identi fiable to others (see above). This is a great way to track the visibility of your profile and see how likely you are to get noticed by recruiters.Make use of mentions in your status updates. You can tag other users and companies in status updates - just like on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Include the symbol immediately followed by the users/companys name. They will get alerted that you mentioned them.Publish content. If you dont want to create new content - become a content curator Its much easier to simply scroll through your homepage and share, like and comment on posts created by others. In this way, you can easily become visible to a large number of users.Engage in groups. Hiring professionals prowl within industry groups and blogs. Join them - especially if you want to change industries. Its a great way to learn more about an industry and get on a recruiters radar. More about groups below.3. Be unforgettable.Recruiters are busy people who interact with multiple candida tes on a daily basis. You need not only to catch their attentionbut also to sustain it.Join groups and engage.Groups are one of the strongest features in LinkedIn. You have more than 1.3 million groups on LinkedIn to choose from. Join as many relevant groups as you can and engage in the conversation. You have more than 1.3 million groups on LinkedIn to choose from. Join as many as you can.If you dont know where to start, LinkedIn allows you to easily find and connect with people who studied at the same alma mater. unterstellung are the people you have things in common with even if you have no previous experience. Dont forget toTake part in the conversation only if you have something to say. Never complain or express sour grapes. Share your unique expertise.Post useful and interesting content to your groups. This can be any piece of work-related content blog articles you wrote or read, a funny (but relevant) video you watched, a news report concerning your industry, etc.Encourage othe rs to engage with you. Ask questions, especially those which can be answered with very short answers.Leverage groups to message other group members. LinkedIn restricts 11 InMail communication to first-degree connections. Theres a workaround for that. First, you need to be a LinkedIn user for at least 30 days. Second, you need to be a member of the particular group at least for 4 days. If you qualify, then LinkedIn allows you to send 15 one-on-one messages per month to other group members - even those youre not connected with. When you interact with other members of your groups, you become impossible to overlook and your personal brand grows familiar.Get some recommendations.Recommendations add layers of credibility to your profile in the eyes of potential employers. Recruiters want to see that youve developed solid relationships. This means theres nothing better than a thoughtful recommendation from a former colleague or a respected peer. How can you get them? You can simply ask your former colleagues or partners to write a recommendation for you. If you do this, remember that most professionals are quite busy and many can find writing difficult. For these reasons, it helps if you give them a hand by reminding them of your past collaborations.Another way to do it would be to offer to give recommendations to others. Try to write a glowing recommendation to your past colleagues and watch the awesome things happen. When you give recommendations, you get recommended in return. Most recruiters dont care if you have gazillions of endorsements. They are mostly regarded as theconfetti of the LinkedIn world. Still, you want to keep your endorsements organised and in order.Build your network and stay on the radar.Everyone you meet can turn into a useful contact down the line. So connect with everyone. And make it personal. The first step to do this is to personalise the message you send when you ask people to connect with you. Even a simple personalised message can do wonde rs It was a pleasure to meet you at the conference. I enjoyed our conversation. Good luck with your future projects and lets stay in touch. Kind regards, Martin.Connect with everyone. And make it personal. This also means you should never connect with people through the mobile app, as the app doesnt allow for customised messages. Also, every time you connect to someone new on LinkedIn, you should get into thehabit of filling out information in the Relationship tab on their profile. behauptung notes are only visible to you and they will help you recall valuable information in future. 3 Super Easy Ways to Make Your Co-workers Dayand Boost Your Own Karma in the Process
3 Super Easy Ways to Make Your Co-workers Dayand Boost Your Own Karma in the Process3 Super Easy Ways to Make Your Co-workers Day- and Boost Your Own Karma in the ProcessFew things make us enjoy our jobs more than working with people we like. Co-workers who, despite having piles of work on their plates, will occasionally turn away from their screens and talk to us about our weekend plans, the latest episode of our favorite TV shows, or even our roommate frustrations. Its hard to imagine how we would survive a day without seeing a few friendly faces scattered around the office. So, how can you show appreciation for the people who often literally make your day better just by smiling in your direction?Answer Random acts of kindness. I know, its easier said than done. In todays workplace, where its common for employees to spend the entire eight (and by eight, I mean nine to 10) hours crossing off to-do after to-do at their desks, its difficult to spare a few moments to just express grati tude. But these people are well worth that time. Thats why weve come up with three extremely quick and easy ways (think no more than five minutes each) you can send some love to your co-workers. We guarantee that these acts of kindness will make everyone involved (even you) feel all warm and fuzzy inside. 1. deutsche post dhl an Encouraging Sticky Note on Someones DeskYou know that sticky notes can push you ahead in your career They help you reach your goals, they get others to do what you want, and they even serve as inspiration. So why cant sticky notes also motivate and encourage your co-workers? Think about the people you work with. Is anyone working on a particularly stressful assignment that appears to have gotten nowhere in the past week? Who is preparing for a client meeting and is noticeably nervous about it? Grab a Post-it note, and write a short message explaining why you believe in him or her so strongly. You can make it cheesy, funny, or just straight-up easy by using on e of these motivational quotes. 2. Send a Good Job Email Out to the TeamSurprise, surprise You arent the only one who craves positive feedback about a recent success- no matter how small. You can very easily make someones day by sending a short email to your team celebrating a co-workers recent wins. Did someone recently close a deal, add a feature to your company site, reach a quarterly goal, or simply kick butt presenting at your weekly meeting? If so, use the next five minutes to write a quick email. You can talk about what it is that wowed you, as well as why you admire the achievement. Avoid more than two sentences of praise, though, because then you just sound like a suck-up- making a sweet moment feel weird for everyone. Bonus points if you can find the perfect GIF to sum up how proud you feel.3. Tweet Words of KindnessA few months ago, there was a campaign called RTOK, or Random Tweets of Kindness. The campaign encouraged people to send each other words of thanks, encouragem ent, or admiration. Unaware of the campaign, I received several tweets that day and was pleasantly surprised. Why not, then, extend these heartwarming 140-character messages beyond the RTOK campaigns and send them whenever? There can never be too much positivity on the internet. (Seriously, though, it could use some positivity.) While giving specific colleagues shout-outs might be unprofessional on LinkedIn or Facebook, its perfectly normal on Twitter. Start crafting uplifting messages for those co-workers who are active on the platform. Some examples Im very thankful for insert awesome person for always insert reason theyre awesome or Cant believe you insert amazing accomplishment, insert amazing person- your hard work paid off Quick reminder Dont send random tweets of kindness to your favorite colleagues every day, because your messages will appear less genuine each time. Theres only so many times you can virtually exclaim great job without sounding fake, or worse, like a crazed f an.Have other ideas for sending your co-workers some love? Sadness The surprising emotion that improves focus
Sadness The surprising emotion that improves focusSadness The surprising emotion that improves focusEverything youre about to read departureed from a fractured tooth. Seriously. Its a bit embarrassing to share, but then, we all have our weak moments.Last year, a tooth in my upper jaw started to go south on me. It began as a slow ache and mild sensitivity to cold.I gutted it out, because I welches in the middle of moving my family from California to Nevada. In January, I finally saw the dentist. X-rays revealed a cracked filling. My dentist removed the old amalgam and fashioned a spiffy new crown, right there in his office. I paid my bill and whistled out the door. Problem solved.Until a month later. Suddenly, there welches pain again, and a sharp sensitivity to cold. So, back to the dentist. More X-rays, but no sign of a problem.X-rays dont pick up everything, John. Im referring you to an endodontist. He can drill through your new crown and do a root canal, my dentist said with a smil e.Great. It welches all I could say.Its too unstableThe endodontist was a kind man with a gentle touch. He also figured out what was going on. Turns out, the problem was not my new crown but the tooth behind it. It had a fracture. An hour into the subsequent root canal, the endodontist said, John, I just found a second fracture in this tooth. I dont think its a candidate for a crown. Its too unstable. Im going to refer you to an oral surgeon for extraction.Swell, I mumbled, as the assistant provided mora suction.A week later, I was getting generous amounts of novocaine speared into my jaw by the smiling oral surgeon. Okay, it wasnt a spear, but it was a substantial needle. The oral surgeon explained that hed drill apart the tooth, and then extract each of the three roots.I know, doesnt that just sound special? My creativity intensifiedI should add that during all of this, I was still getting over a bad head cold. My ears were plugged up, and I wasnt feeling my best.At one point, the dr illing got intense. Even though there was no pain, the rattling in my head was magnified by my plugged up ears. And then the surgeon gripped part of the tooth and I could hear him cracking away at it.This didnt really happen, but it felt like it.I had to hold my greifhand up and gesture for him to stop. It was totally weird. I felt this wave of anxiety and sadness. I started thinking about the fact that this tooth has been with me all my life. And now, its getting ripped out of my jaw.Its silly, I know. I think the fact I wasnt feeling well amplified my emotions. You know how sometimes, when youre home with the flu, it seems like Hallmark movies can just destroy you? Perhaps illness brings our feelings closer to the surface?Eventually, I calmed down and waived the surgeon on. He finished in short order, they stuffed gauze in my mouth, I paid the bill, and that was that. The surgeon called me that night to ask how I was doing. I said fine because there was no pain. But strangely, a li ttle part of me was still down. Like I was mourning my senfgas tooth, or lamenting the aging process. The unexpected part in all of this is that my creativity intensified. Somehow, this mild melancholy fueled a lot of creative ideas. I jotted them down in my journal, pleased with the flow of thoughts and epiphanies. It feels so good to hurt so badWe live in a culture enamorad with happiness. We read blog posts on how to be happier. We watch movies and long for happy endings.Theres nothing wrong with happiness. We all long for well-being and relief from lifes challenges and hardships. None of us want to suffer with prolonged sadness. But sometimes, we want a little sadness. A bit of melancholy in a movie. A sad, touching novel. A song that conjures past emotions of loss, or a breakup, or lingering emotions.Elton John sang about sadness in his song Sad Songs (Say So Much). The song lyrics contain the followingIf someone else is suffering enough oh to write it downWhen every single word ma kes senseThen its easier to have those songs aroundThe kick inside is in the line that finally gets to youAnd it feels so good to hurt so badAnd suffer just enough to sing the bluesSadness is a universal emotion. When writers, musicians, artists and actors invoke sadness in their work, it helps us connect with our own feelings.Sometimes, we just need to take a break and have a good cry. Let out the pent up frustration and unhappiness. Sad movies, books and songs help us do that. Its like we need that time out, to purge our demons. Afterward, we usually start feeling better. The unexpected thing about sadness is that it benefits us in several ways, not the least of which is improved focus. The power of sadnessAccording to an article by marriage and family therapist Betty TulliusStudies have shown that, contrary to being a useless emotion, sadness is beneficial to us in ways that actually enhance our well-being. Joseph Paul Forgas, Ph.D., has discovered that when we are sad, we can reme mber details more accurately, have better judgment, and have more motivation than when we are happy. This seems to be due in part to sadness functioning as a signal that something is not right, making us more attentive to detail, more alert to social cues, and/or more motivated to make changes.I know theres truth to this, because when my father passed away, I had to handle everything. The life insurance, notifications, obituary, memorial, burial, finances, his estate, and more. Throughout the whole ordeal, despite my sadness, I was razor focussed.Another time, a former mentor of mine passed away. He was a retired police chief I used to work for. When he died, I was serving as police chief, and responsible for arranging his entire memorial service. The event required weeks of planning, including bagpipes, honor guard, flag ceremony, speakers, parking, family coordination and more. Despite my sadness, I was on top of my game in every aspect. I had complete focus.Betty Tullius notesEmbr acing sadness, on the other hand, helps us identify what is wrong and promotes thinking of ways to cope with and heal from difficult experiences. It allows us to know ourselves better and increases our empathy for others. Talking about the feeling connects us, elicits support, and brings more meaning to our relationships. We do not have to do anything to begin this process because when we experience difficulties, sadness prompts us to slow down and feel, which is exactly what we need to do to heal.In the article Four Ways Sadness May Be Good for You, psychologist Joseph P. Forgas notesSad people are more focused on external cues and will not rely solely on their first impressions, which happy people are more inclined to trust.Forgas goes on to writeSad people are less prone to judgmental errors, are more resistant to eye-witness distortions, are sometimes more motivated, and are more sensitive to social norms. They can act with more generosity, too.Who knew that sadness enhanced foc us, mental acuity, greater sensitivity and even generosity? Maybe sadness temporarily interrupts the ebullient chatter in our brains, thus settling into a calmer (albeit sadder) state. Its important to draw a distinction between occasional sadness and prolonged depression. The latter requires the right care and treatment.Forgas sums up the benefits of occasional sadness with the following observationPerhaps that is why, even though feeling sad can be hard, many of the greatest achievements of Western art, music, and literature explore the landscape of sadness. In everyday life, too, people often seek ways to experience sadness, at least from time to time - by listening to sad songs, watching sad movies, or reading sad books.A lighter heartYears ago, I came across a slender novel in a bookstore. It was The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks. It was the book that launched Nicholas Sparks writing career.I read a bit of the beginning, and ended up purchasing the book. I found the entire story very moving. Heres an excerpt from the novelI am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and Ive led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but Ive loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough.. ?Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook)Reading The Notebook tapped my emotions. It made me feel moments of sadness. It made me reflect on the nature of relationships and love. The sadness it brought out in me informed some of my creative projects. Not everyone cares for sad novels or Hallmark movies. Sometimes they can become excessively sentimental. But when a novel, song, piece of art or movie gets it right with sadness, it can truly connect with us. It can change our lives. The next time sadness alights on your shoulders, take heart. It happens to all of us from time to time. Heck, it happened to me during a tooth extractionThe good news is that sadness can sharpen your focus. Maybe even lead you to creative breakthroughs with your work.So go ahead, read that sad novel. Listen to that mournful song. Bawl your eyes out to that melancholy movie. Your focus will improve, youll purge those bad feelings, and eventually emerge with a lighter heart.- - - One last thingIm John P. Weiss. I paint landscapes, draw cartoons and write about life. How to See Who Viewed Your LinkedIn Profile
How to See Who Viewed Your LinkedIn Profile How to See Who Viewed Your LinkedIn Profile LinkedIn has become one of the most popular online platforms for social, career and job-related networking. Are you interested in knowing who has been checking you out on LinkedIn? The information you can find out depends on whether you have a free membership account or a paid, premium membership that comes with certain features. In either case, you must set your privacy settings to make your profile visible so that viewers can see your name and headline. This also allows the site to track information regarding people that have viewed your posted information. Heres how to adjust your settings to see who has viewed your LinkedIn profile. Free LinkedIn Accounts If you have a free account and elect to display your name and headline, youll be able to see up to five results of who has viewed your profile, the number of visits to your profile, and the number of times youve appeared in search results. The information you can see regarding people whove viewed you depends on how they have designated their own privacy settings. If they have set name and headline you should see their name, job title, and employer. If they have elected to stay partially anonymous then you can see limited information like title and industry, or company only. In cases where they have elected to be totally anonymous, you will see only LinkedIn Member or Someone from the United States. Premium LinkedIn Accounts Premium users get to see an unlimited number of people who have visited their profile and other information like trends in viewership and industry representation. However, premier users will still not see any additional information about viewers who have restricted access via their own privacy settings. Where to See Your Profile Views The information about who has viewed your profile appears in the section called Your Dashboard on your profile page. Up to 5 results of who has viewed your profileNumber of visits to your profileNumber of times youve appeared in search results You may start wondering who has checked you out on LinkedIn and what to do when someone views your profile. Should you message them or connect with them, or not? What, if anything, can you do to capitalize on those who have looked at your profile? It could be a hiring manager youd be thrilled to hear from, someone who could help you network your way to a new job at a desirable company, or an old colleague youd love to get back in touch with. When you see the connection and understand why they viewed yo or how they found your profile, youll have more information to help you decide if or how to respond. Should You Contact Someone Who Views Your Profile? Reaching out to viewers with whom you have a logical connection seems more natural than responding to a random person who has no obvious reason to look at your profile. For example, you might have graduated from the same college in the same time period or with a similar major. Maybe you shared a previous employer, although at different times or in different locations, lived in the same area, have lots of common contacts or belong to the same professional organization. If you reach out, you dont necessarily have to mention that they viewed your profile, and they may not even remember doing so, in your outreach communication. You can focus on your common bond and why you would like to connect with them. When Youre Not Sure Why They Were Looking Keep in mind the fact that viewers without an obvious connection may have accidentally clicked on your profile. Sometimes, as people search for someone, they may click on the profile of someone else with that same name, for example. Thus, if you have absolutely no professional or personal connection with the person, you might simply want to ignore them. However, if you see that they work for a company for which you have an interest, or if you find some other point of connection, you might want to message them. After all, typically the worst outcome is that they ignore you, so you have little to lose except maybe some of your allotted messages, depending on your LinkedIn account level. In your communication, make it clear why youd like to connect, including how you might be helpful to them. You can either reference their viewing of your profile or simply state your reason for reaching out based on their background. When to Reach Out You dont want it to seem like youre stalking people who check you out on LinkedIn, so take a breather and dont reach out immediately after a person views your profile. Waiting a day or two makes sense. If the person contacted you accidentally, they probably wont remember. If its a recruiter or hiring manager, you dont want to give the impression that youre desperate and immediately pouncing on everyone who views your profile. What to Say in Your LinkedIn Message If you do mention that the viewer has visited your profile, you might state something like, I noticed that you had stumbled upon my profile and as I checked out your profile I was intrigued to see that our careers have some interesting parallels. I would love to chat with you about⦠This way, you acknowledge a common interest between the two of you and provide a reason for possibly furthering the connection. If you do decide to reach out, review these tips for sending LinkedIn messages and invitations before you connect.

Shocking Purity
Shocking Purity Shocking Purity Shocking Purity As the fresh waters of our world become murkier, theres an even greater need for better and cheaper ways to de-foul the befouled. Now theres a new method for making salty, poisoned, or otherwise undrinkable water pure: shock it, and watch it turn clean. In 2009 Martin Bazant, now a professor of chemical engineering and applied mathematics at MIT, was at Stanford, where researchers had just discovered that by applying a charge to microfluidic channels, water could be effectively depleted of salt. But the phenomenon occurred on unmoving water for a lab on a chip. When I saw their work, I understood the basic physics at play, which had to do with surface transports and surface conduction and surface convection, says Bazant. That was where I got the inspiration for my work. And Bazants work has now resulted in a first prototype that transforms dirty water to pure. Electrodialysis In any kind of electrodialysis a current is applied to an electrolyte and positive ions go to one side and negatives to the other. What limits traditional electrodialyses, and many other electro chemical processes, is when the concentration of salt goes to zero youve reached transport limitation, says Bazant. His system overcomes that by adding a shockwave. The shockwave (red line) pushes the salt ions off to one side of the flow, leaving fresh water at the other side, where it can be separated out. Image: MIT When you reach strong depletion, the electric fields are getting big because the conductivity is going down, and youre imposing a high current and that electric field pushes on the ions that are in the double layer. Basically, it is able to carry the ions to the surface faster than diffusion by two mechanisms, he says. One is surface conduction, where the electrical field is literally dragging the ions to their place. The other is surface convection, which is driven by electroosmotic flow. The electric fields that are pulling the ions drag the fluid with along too, creating convection. That brings salty fluid to the surface faster than diffusion, he says. Where other electrodialysis methods leave the water 90 percent pure, Bazants technology hits a purity level of 99.99 percent, with no detectable salt left in the water. And its not just salt. The technique can remove practically anything from the flow of water. Thanks to the shock wave, The flows will transport anything thats in the solution, says Bazant. So you can have neutral species being affected by these sort of unusual transport phenomenon. Desalination For the desalination of seawater, nothing is likely to beat reverse osmosis, despite the high-energy cost. But in cases where the salt concentration is lower, or theres a specific impurity in the water thats being targeted, shock electrodialysis would make a superior alternative. Think the Canary Islands. There, all drinking water comes from seawater run through reverse osmosis. Then, because of high concentrations of boron, the water is run through reverse osmosis a second time. So theyre paying double to achieve this result, says Bazant. You could imagine that for them, after the first pass, you run our system. Similarly, the situation in Flint, MI, could be another potential application. I dont think it would make sense to run reverse osmosis on all that water just to remove some lead ions, says Bazant. We just have to remove the toxic ions, and do it with very high precision, and very thoroughly. So thats very well suited for the type of process that we have. The system also has the advantage of being scalable, he says. It could work for a hiker in the woods or a municipality interested in water recycling. The Army has already inquired, hoping to use a small-scale version for the individual soldier or platoon. Im getting a lot calls from people saying, Can you sell me a device right now? I say, Well, no, not really. I have this little thing that sits in the palm of your hand and its the first of its kind. But I dont think were that far off. Its really a question of resources and what the pathway will be to commercialization. It will happen, but when, and how quickly, remains to be seen. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Iâm getting a lot calls from people saying âCan you sell me a device right now?â I say, âWell, no, not really. I have this little thing that sits in the palm of your hand and itâs the first of its kind.âProf. Martin Bazant, MIT

1 Part of Branding Vital For Job Search
1 Part of Branding Vital For Job Search 1 Part of Branding Vital For Job Search Branding is the hot topic in executive job search these days. Branding is an aspect of the search that needs to be right, in order for to you to break into the hidden job market correctly. However, what Iâm seeing tells me that while most everyone is trying to brand, that branding could be significantly better. The element of branding to focus on is authenticity. Move branding from theory to reality by making it authentically you â" brand Y.O.U. as a matter of fact. The importance of building authenticity into your brand is this: whatâs true for you is what you can confidently say to others. What you say with confidence is what makes you stand out, over and above the crowd, so youâre memorable and top of mind to the other person. The 1st way to build a brand of authenticity is to look within. What are your top executive leadership skills? âTopâ means the skills youâre good at AND you love AND you want to do. On a professional level, you have a certain set of gifts, ones that show you at your best, that youâre happy to share, that make the other personâs (in this case, the employerâs) life and business better. The 2nd way to build a brand of authenticity is to look outside of you. You know that perception is reality, right? What other people perceive about you is a major component of your brand. Review your annual performance reviews, read through your letters of reference, and go over your recommendations on LinkedIn. Determine what themes emerge. If two or three or four people who donât know each other are all saying the same things, itâs highly likely they are describing the authentic you. The 3rd way to build a brand of authenticity is to speak your truth. You know what I like about your truth? When itâs authentic, itâs unique. Youâre the only person who can say it. The best way to get to your truth is to think about how you may tell a story either after work at drinks, or at dinner, so envision yourself in a normal conversation with people you know. Letâs say you just finished a multi-million dollar project, and at one point, it was a mess. Youâre talking about what you did to make the customer happy and keep their business. Then think about the larger story. Consider whether youâre always that person who swoops in and changes things around so the customers stay happy. What is it about you that youâre able to do that time and time again? It could be because you have an eye for both sides. It could be because you have an ear for whatâs not being said. So what you can fold into your brand is, âIt seems like I am usually the one who just connects with what the customer is saying, I say that to our people, and get them to deliver. Thatâs what Iâm known for doing.â So, refresh your brand. Build a brand of authenticity. Look within, look outside yourself, and speak your truth. As you network in conversations with people, youâll do that with confidence and youâll be memorable. As people start to keep you top of mind, theyâll think of you for opportunities. Thatâs how you navigate the hidden job market correctly. Brand you is brand true. What's one thing you've done to successfully reinvigorate your brand? Share your story in the comments!

8 Things to Bring to Every Job Interview
8 Things to Bring to Every Job Interview 8 Things to Bring to Every Job Interview When youâre preparing for a job interview , many things go through your mind. Most of them involve what you need to say and the questions youâll need to answer. But donât forget - there are also a handful of physical items youâll want to bring along. Wondering what to bring to an interview? Use this as your checklist: Odds are, you wouldnât leave the house without it anyway, but make sure to bring your phone with you so you can enter the directions to your interview location, especially if youâve never been there before. If you donât have a smartphone capable of GPS navigation, print out directions. The worst thing you can do is get lost, which will make you late, which will likely prevent you from moving forward in the interview process . On your phoneâs notepad app, or on the directions youâve printed out, write out the name and contact information of your interviewer(s). This way, if something does go wrong on your way to the interview, you can let them know. This will also help ensure that you donât forget your interviewerâs name - a major faux pas. Itâs not quite as common nowadays, but you never know if youâll be asked for identification, so itâs worth bringing anyway. When in doubt, ask the person who set up your interview in advance - better safe than sorry! As a job seeker, business cards are great for networking and interviewing. Your business card should include your name, job title, email, phone number and any other contact information you think is important. Give your card to your interviewer, or anyone else you talk to about the job. (If you need inspiration about what to include, I recently came across these cute ones from Moo!) You may be used to taking notes on your laptop or phone, but in interviews, it definitely looks better if you have paper and a pen handy to jot down notes like people to contact, addresses or anything else mentioned in the interview that you want to remember later. Being prepared with your own supplies to capture important information that your interviewer provides you with is a surefire way to make you look proactive and thoughtful. Print out a few copies of the most updated version of your resume . You should also have extra copies in case you need to reference it during the interview - or if extra interviewers show up. Bring an updated list of your references . Your interviewer may or may not ask for these, but again, itâs best to be over-prepared. The list should have at least three professional references, along with how they know you and how to contact them. Depending on the kind of job youâre after, it might be valuable to bring a portfolio of your past work . This can be a folder, binder or even a website shown on your tablet. Your portfolio should be organized in a way that makes it easy to reference during your interview. The contents of your portfolio will depend on your profession, but there should be quality examples of your work and accomplishments. At the end of every interview, you will be asked if you have any questions. Have a list of questions ready to go so youâre prepared. These questions can be about the rest of the hiring process, company culture or anything else youâre interested in, but remember: You want to your questions to be specific and reflect the fact that youâve done research, so your interviewer can see your true interest in the position. When thinking about what to bring an interview, a lot of things come to mind, but the eight above are the most essential. While they might seem simple, itâs important not to forget them - they really might make a difference on the day of your interview.
