MMs and Breast Cancer
MMs and Breast Cancer A little bit off-topic but something good to end the week on: chocolate and service. I have a friend down the street that got breast cancer last year she was treated and supposedly everything is fine now. But it was very scary for her family and for her friends (like us). Ive never donated to any cancer research or anything like that probably because Im lazy and it I guess it isnt the easiest thing in the world to do (like, say buy some candy ;)) Plus Im a little distrusting of some non-profits because I want to know that 100% (or close to it) goes to the actual cause. So I picked up on this post by a blog buddy (and it has been picked up by his blog buddy, also a very talented recruiter blogger), and I thought Id pass it on. It doesnt get easier than this: Sometime this month (hey, Halloween is in 4 days!!) go to the store and buy the MMs that have the pink ribbon on the package. A portion of that purchase goes to the fight against breast cancer. It cant be easier than that. If you want to donate more, buy this for all of your halloween candy. If you dont eat MMs then buy the peanut MMs and mail them to my house! Im a peanut MM junkie!! (and for all the skeptics out there, heres the official page: MM press release) Find great medical information on breast cancer, diabetes or pregnancy on-line. Need a Change of Pace Consider Working Overseas
Need a Change of Pace Consider Working Overseas Are you tired of your job? Do you feel as if youâre in a rut in both your professional and personal life? If youâre a young, single woman with the world before her, you should at least think about the option of working abroad in a foreign country. Itâs a more practical move than you might think. Four Reasons to Work Abroad Working in a foreign country is a professional activity to which you might not have given much thought in the past, but it offers an array of benefits to anyone whoâs willing to move past her comfort zone and absorb some new experiences. Here are four of the greatest benefits: Exposure to New Cultures Obviously, one of the biggest advantages of working abroad is that you get to immerse yourself in new cultures. Although traveling to a foreign country is great, living there for an extended period of time enables you to see beyond the surface that appeals to tourists, and get a feel for the true heartbeat of a city or nation. The lessons you learn will accompany you for the rest of your life. Greater Chances for Advancement This wonât always be the case, but many people find their way to greater advancement opportunities within their career after theyâve moved abroad. This is especially true if you work in a large and highly competitive locale, such as New York City or Silicon Valley, but move to a city where thereâs a much higher demand for your skills and fewer qualified workers to compete for those positions. Opportunity to Explore One of greatest benefits has nothing to do with work, however, and everything to do with exploring. Instead of spending your weekends at home lying on the sofa and watching Netflix, you can use your weekends to visit places and pursue activities youâve only ever seen in movies and read about on other peopleâs travel blogs. Maybe youâll start a blog of your own! Perfect Timing Nowâs the perfect time to do this. If youâre young, single, and not far along in your career, this is a period when you likely have relatively few strings attached. Itâll be much harder to relocate overseas when you have kids, a spouse, and a firmly established career. Destinations to Consider Depending on what sort of activities you enjoy, the professional field youâre in, and your personality type, there are any number of destinations you might select. Here are three of the top locations to consider. Not only is Rome a beautiful city that offers plenty to do, but it hosts a heavy presence of English-speaking businesses. If youâre looking for a comfortable and safe city to pass a few months or years, Rome should be near the top of your list. If youâre interested in Southeast Asia, Bangkok is an excellent choice. Not only is it an extremely cheap place to live (modern apartments for $600 per month), but there are lots of American expats in the area. Buenos Aires. If youâd rather venture south, Buenos Aires is a terrific alternative. In the heart of Latin America, this metropolis of nearly 3 million features a low cost of living, friendly people, fascinating culture, and a thriving business scene. Add a Spark to Your Life We all have an innate desire to explore the globe and see new places. The world is too vast and breathtaking to spend your entire life in a single city, state, or country. And though it may seem contrary to the career path your parents and friends would desire for you, thereâs something to be said for spreading your wings and settling in another country to work for a while. It doesnât have to be permanent and you can return anytime, as quickly as you arrived. Why not give it a shot?

Why You Must Find Your Purpose NOW
Why You Must Find Your Purpose NOW I have talked about passion before in my articles and it is always interesting to receive the feedback from all of you on what you feel âpassionâ really is. The reality, however, is that passion can be a dirty word. It can be misused and misinterpreted, sending shivers down your spine each time you hear it. Passion is a word that holds a different meaning for everyone. And not everyone can see the link that this word has, or will have, to their career. So letâs look at things a little bit differently. Letâs talk about the word âpurposeâ. A lot of people can related more effectively to finding purpose in their career, or in their job. It is a much less emotional word and can have a meaning that is more commonly shared. What is purpose? Purpose is ultimately the reason why you do or create something. It can also be your own individual sense of determination. You can see how these meanings can link you to your career. What is a career purpose? Not everyone sees what they do as their career, but I argue that this is because it is actually their purpose not to have a career. For many individuals, a job is something that provides them with the opportunity of fulfilling other goals. Take for example, an individual that wants to study but knows that they need so much money to be able to commit to that study. They take up a role that meets their financial goals; as this is their purpose. But this purpose has no less meaning or value if the individual had a different purpose, perhaps one that focused more on their desire to be a General Manager of their organisation. The purpose that we have personally will drive our determination to achieve something in our careers, and this then becomes our career purpose. Why is this important? Ever had the feeling of not wanting to get up in the morning, but realising you have to as other people are depending on you? Those people are your purpose, your reason for getting up in the morning. This is why recognising your actual purpose in your career is important. Whatever this purpose is, it is that which you need to fulfil to assist in you achieving appropriate motivation to get out of bed in the morning. So what can my purpose be? We are all different. This also means that our purpose will be different as we need to fulfil very different objectives and desires. Some of the things that people identify as their purpose includes: Financial needs Individual status Working in a team Having nice holidays Buying new cars Saving for a house Living a comfortable life Being mentally challenged Being physically fit Teaching others All of these items, and many others, may align to your own purpose. Or you may not even know what your purpose is just yet. If not, this is something that you should start to consider as this will help you ensure that you are personally satisfied which in turn may increase your level of satisfaction in the job or career that you have chosen. How do I identify my purpose? Identifying your purpose may be easy, or it may be something that you need to work with a career coach on to identify. The best place to start is to take an outside look in to your own thoughts. What do you desire the most? Is this related to your current role or is your current role going to support you in getting there? Is your need about financial reward? Or is it mental challenges? If so, are these being satisfied or what can you do to achieve this? Do you need to seek more financial rewards or should you look to studying? Do you want to help others? Are you able to volunteer in this or is this something you would like to do full time and you need to transition your career? There are a lot of questions around each of these and this is why it is not something that you may be able to answer straight away. If you feel that you cannot answer this yourself, then it is recommended that you look for a qualified and accredited career coach that can support you in this. Remember, whether it is a job or a career that you have, as long as they are fulfilling your purpose then you will have much greater satisfaction.

4 Steps to Take After a Job Rejection CareerMetis.com
4 Steps to Take After a Job Rejection â" CareerMetis.com Photo Credit â" pixabay.comApplying for a job does not guarantee that you will get the position you want. Inevitably, there will be rejections â" and for most applicants, this is not an easy thing to deal with. Some Reasons Why Your Application Was Turned DownevalBetter Candidate â" Someone else may have more experience than you do or perhaps showed more promise during the job interview. In other words, the organization preferred someone else.Internal Candidates â" There are some positions that may already have internal applicants lined up. Companies want to get as many applicants as possible so they open the vacant position to both internal and external applicants. Often, they end up employing the applicant from their own team if none of the outside candidates proves to be better; this will help them cut down on training costs.evalLack of Experience â" Applying for a job even without the needed experience is possible; however, you may sometimes be rejected since you do not have the qualities that match the job description.Lost Application â" This usually happens if you are applying to companies with plenty of job postings. Due to the hundreds or thousands of applications they receive, yours may have gotten misplaced or lost in the process.Regardless of the reason, rejections can be very difficult to deal with. However, always remember that getting rejected from the job you are applying for is not the end. Think positively! This rejection may open doors to better opportunities.Got Rejected From a Job? 4 Steps to Take1. Talk to Your Family and FriendsEven if you know that job rejections are common, this may still have a negative effect on you. It is a good idea to talk to your family and friends to get your frustrations off your chest. If you are too shy to speak to them, you can always talk to a recruitment consultant or to a career counsellor.2. Send a Thank You NoteIf you really want to be part of a specific organization and you wish to be considered if another opportunity opens there, send a thank you note to those who participated in the interview process. The company may have offered the job to someone else, but that person might change his mind and reject the job. When this happens, the employer usually takes another look at the candidates who almost got the job. This will prevent the organization from starting from scratch and spending time meeting many possible hires. So if you made a positive impression on the company, you will surely have another chance to secure the vacant position.3. Do Something to Improve YourselfThere are several things you can do to improve your chances of beating all the other candidates the next time you apply for a job. Being aware of the seven dwarf personalities can help you properly present yourself in a CV.evalMost importantly, you have to look for ways to get noticed. You can get a second opinion regarding how your CV or resume looks. And if you think you do not have enough knowledge or experien ce for the job you want, enroll yourself in relevant seminars and training programs. For instance, you can undergo VAT training and seminars if you want to enter the finance industry. Get all the qualifications you may need to ensure that the next time you apply, you will be hired.eval4. Practice Your Interview TechniqueTo get the most out of an interview process, consider what you can gain from what you have experienced and how you can use such wisdom to boost your career pursuits.By participating in the interview, you can already practice your interview skills as well as learn more about the career you want to pursue. The interview can also be an opportunity for you to build connections. Who knows? You could be working with your interviewer later on.evalRequesting feedback from the interviewer about your interview can also be of help. Although interviewers are not obliged to tell you their reason for rejecting your application, this does not mean that you cannot ask. You may even be provided valuable insights on enhancing your views for future interviews. It is also a good idea for you to practice your interviewing techniques. You can ask a sibling or friend to role-play and help you improve.A job rejection must be seen as a stepping stone in your career path. Job opportunities will continuously knock on your door. It will take time, resilience, and effort to achieve great things. And rejection is just an invitation for you to try again.

Are You Too Proud to Ask for Job Search Assistance
Are You Too Proud to Ask for Job Search Assistance Carer Diva wrote a great post on how frequently people pass up free career advice. Eve Tahmincioglu references the fact that many companies that go through layoffs offer career assistance services (often referred to as outplacement) as part of their severance packages to employees but many dont take advantage of it. I am constantly surprised by the number of people who decline outplacement services. This service is offered at no cost to the displaced employee and generally includes a multitude of services ranging from resume guidance, to assessment, to career coaching. Yet many people never take advantage of these services because they are too angry, stubborn, or proud to see their value. Here are the most common objections I hear regarding outplacement services. Will an outplacement service find me a job? If not, whats the point? Outplacement firms dont recruit for open positions, but they do prepare you for interviews and help you get in front of recruiters. They can give you a competitive edge in a tight labor market. My resume is in good shape. I dont think I need any help. Hmmm. And just how many resumes have you written in your life? Two or three? Doesnt it make sense to have a professional give it a once over, just in case there is a way to improve upon the quality of the content?Im a great interviewer; once I get my foot in the door, I always nail it. So how are you getting in the front door? Have you explored every possible strategy, optimized your network, and created a killer resume? Is it possible that a coach could offer up a new strategy to add into the mix?I have a lot of contacts and finding work shouldnt be a problem. Fantastic! Whats your plan for executing on that strategy? Do you have a way to manage, systematize, and track your contacts? Whats your follow up plan and what do you plan to do when you hit networking obstacles? A coach might have some fresh advice for you.My resume is circulating on the various job boards. I think I have it covered. Yep, you have it covered. You have blanketed the boards with your resume and you now represent the low hanging fruit that few recruiters want to touch. There are better strategies for creating visibility for your candidacy and a coach can walk you through them.Let go of the past and remember that the outplacement firm is not connected to your former company; they are merely providing a service to their employees. If you were eligible for outplacement services and declined, contact the person who administered your severance package and see if the resources are still available. If not, check out the Career Solvers home page for some free resume and job search downloads.

Does your internal compass point to fulfillment - Hallie Crawford
Does your internal compass point to fulfillment How do you find a job that fits you? Start with fulfillment. All of us want to feel fulfilled in some way shape or form by the work we do, whether its in our careers or outside work in volunteering etc. I spoke about this at Georgia Tech recently, heres some of the information I shared. Theres good news and bad newsBad news is recent studies show that 87% of Americans donât like their jobs and 80% arenât passionate about what they do. The good news is it doesnt have to be that way. We all have an internal compass that tells us when we are on or off track. And we have to learn to listen to it. Often we get so busy we ignore this internal voice, and end up years later with a life or job that isnt quite a fit. So tune in to your internal compass, your passion or sense of purpose, in order to get back on track with creating the life you want.
